How to Do Magic Tricks – Avoiding Mistakes

Learning how to do magic tricks is more than just learning how to do the actual tricks, but it’s got a lot to do with your stage manner, your way of interacting with your audience, and how to make the tricks look real. While learning how to do magic tricks only will be enough to fool your family and friends, it will require a lot more if you are going to actually make a career out of it.

Many magicians make a few mistakes when learning how to do magic tricks, and these mistakes stick with them for the rest of their careers. If you are trying to learn how to how to do magic tricks, here are the main mistakes to avoid:

1. When learning how to do magic tricks, keep in mind that you can’t act arrogant with your audience. Acting like you are better than the “marks” in your audience will simply isolate them from you, and you want them to feel drawn into the act by your personality and charm so they will be even more astonished when you do some “amazing trick”. You aren’t better or smarter than your audience, so don’t act like it.
2. Many magicians try to be clever or funny when they are up on stage, and they talk to their audience or volunteers as if they were children. Many magicians learn how to do magic tricks, but they never learn how to avoid embarrassing volunteers when they come up on stage. An essential mistake to avoid when learning how to do magic tricks is embarrassing your volunteers, who should feel like they are having fun rather than feeling put down.
3. Preparing for your magic trick is 9/10 of the actual trick, and many magicians who learn how to do magic tricks neglect to learn how to prepare for the trick itself. Preparing for a trick means warming the audience up to the trick, as well as gathering the proper materials to complete the trick before the show even starts. Without doing these two things, your magic career will never go anywhere.
4. Make sure that your show is structured properly before performing it in front of people. A show that has a number of similar or identical tricks in a row will bore the audience, who are expecting to see wild and varied magic tricks. When learning how to do magic tricks for a performance, make sure that you learn tricks that will go together well but that will be different enough that you will not bore your audience.
5. Don’t automatically assume that you need to wear a costume just because you are learning how to do magic tricks. The costume doesn’t make the performer, but it simply serves to enhance the performer’s character. If you feel that a costume will serve your magic persona well, use a costume. If not, dress normally and don’t worry about trying to use a costume to impress your audience.
